Minister’s Housing Allowance

October 11, 2017 By

Saints of JKP,

Many of you have heard about a ruling from a federal district judge in Wisconsin which declares Minister’s housing allowance to be unconstitutional. Many of you probably recall that this same judge made the same ruling two years ago. It was later overturned by a higher court. There are still steps to unfold concerning this ruling. What is helpful for you to know right now:

-There is no need to be concerned about your taxes and housing allowance for 2017.

-A team of lawyers from the PCUSA and several other denominations are monitoring and addressing the situation in an effort to preserve this benefit to their clergy.

-This will likely require some time to fully adjudicate.

-We will continue to pass information as it becomes available.

While no one knows with certainty what the future holds we urge everyone to remain calm with the assurance that professionals are working hard on behalf of those who have made their financial plans according to the current formula of compensation.

2016 GENERAL ASSEMBLY
OF THE
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (USA)
June 18-25,
Portland, Oregon

This year’s theme, The Hope in Our Calling, from Ephesians 1:18:
“so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints” (NRSV)

You can watch all that is happening at the 2016 General Assembly by visiting the PC (USA) website:         http://oga.pcusa.org/section/ga/222nd-general-assembly-2016/

OPENING WORSHIP

Several thousand people are expected to gather in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, June 18, for the opening worship service of the 222nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  The Opening Service will be streamed live. You will be able to reach it on the link above.

The assembly’s opening worship service begins at 11 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time and is scheduled to last about ninety minutes. It will include communion, the commissioning of assembly commissioners and advisory delegates, a sermon by outgoing Moderator Heath Rada, and music by a mass choir, a bell choir, and a contemporary band.

The liturgy for the service—including the words and music of hymns—is available online for download by groups planning to worship in other locations. Congregations joining the service by live stream may want to plan how to participate in the Lord’s Supper as well.
