Mindoro Presbyterian Church
100 Years
The Presbyterians came to Lewis Valley, in Northern La Crosse County WI, in the late 1800’s The Register of Deeds Office of LaCrosse County has the following notations. The President and Secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Lewis Valley certify that on the 6th day of January, 1863 A.D. the male members of all ages met in the schoolhouse of the village of Newton (now Mindoro) was there place of worship for incorporating themselves the Lewis Valley Presbyterian Church.
The trustees of the Lewis Valley Presbyterian Church were granted the sum of $600 from the board of church erection fund of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. The letter was signed on August 17, 1874.
For some unknown reason some twenty years later the church was unable to function as such and on April, 23 1896 the building was given by the Mission Committee of the Presbytery of La Crosse to the Mindoro Norwegian Lutheran Church for a sum of $610.
Twenty years later in April, 1916 at a meeting of the Presbytery of La Crosse, the Reverend Perri-Jones made a request on behalf of the people of Mindoro that a Presbyterian Church be organized. The request was granted and Reverend Jones was appointed to organize a Mindoro Presbyterian Church at the earliest possible date.
On June 27, 1916 The Rev. W.H. Perri-Jones, of North Bend WI, Rev. Finch A Clark of LaCrosse, WI and Rev. S.L. McKee of West Salem, WI organized the “first” Presbyterian Church of Mindoro. Twenty seven men and women became charter members.
The Mindoro Presbyterian Church purchased the unused Methodist Episcopal Church for a sum of $300. This has been our Sanctuary ever since.
